Port Blair, Oct 27: Spike in road accidents has brought to fore the urgent need to erect speed-breakers on RGT road. This afternoon, an over-speeding Hyundai i20 car, allegedly being driven by a college student, crashed into a parked Maruti Car. While, no one suffered injuries in the mishap, the Maruti car sustained substantial damages in the incident.
The RGT road area has become prone to road accidents in the last few years. Last year, in one of the most terrible accidents, a car at a breakneck speed ran into a pedestrian and crashed into a nearby house breaking the roadside iron fence at RGT Road, ultimately killing the pedestrian.
“The main road stretch at RGT road has become vulnerable to road accidents. Motorists driving at breakneck speeds are a common sight at the road here. With one degree college located in the vicinity, young college students take the roads on rampage with their Cars and high speed vehicles risking lives of ordinary residents of the area. RGT road in a thickly populated residential area and also houses a Temple and a School. Hence, the need for erecting speed-breakers in this arterial road has become imperative to prevent road mishaps,” says Shakti a resident of RGT road.
According to reports, the residents of RGT road have started demanding immediate erection of atleast two speed-breakers in the region to prevent over-speeding by motorists. The Traffic Wing and the Public Works Department should embark on measures to erect standard speed-breakers as method to prevent speeding to protect the lives of ordinary residents.
