Port Blair, Oct.14: Entrepreneur has a leading role in the economic development not only for himself, but for the society and the nation as well. Hence it is necessary to inculcate entrepreneurship spirit among individual so as to enable them take up self employment venture as also provide employment to the unemployed. This was precisely, the objective of the two day Union Territory level seminar on ‘Self Employment for Sustainable Livelihood and Rural Development’ that got underway in the auditorium of Dr. B R Ambedkar Institute of Technology here today. The Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash inaugurated the seminar as the chief guest. Ms. V K Mariyam Bibi, Adhyaksha Zilla Parishad South Andaman also graced the occasion. The seminar is being organized by the Directorate of Industries, in association with Directorate of Agriculture, AH&VS, Fisheries, ACCI, Environment & Forests, NABARD, SBI, DIC, Tourism, ANIIDCO, IT, ANIKVIB and ANCON.
The chief guest, while addressing the gathering on the occasion called for entrepreneurship development alongside tourism development in the islands so as to stimulate the Islands’ economic growth. While encouraging entrepreneurship, importance has to be given to self-employment generating activities, which will gradually provide employment opportunity to the unemployed, he said and underlined the need for encouraging activities such as catering, transport, boat operation etc which will provide more employment and help in improving economic growth. He expressed hope that the ‘would be entrepreneurs’, attending the seminar will make best use of the seminar and come out with positive approach towards self- employment for self-reliance.
The Secretary (Ind.), Smt. Rashmi Krishnan in her address on the occasion said that self-reliance is the need of every individual, the family, society and the nation. It is necessary, therefore, for an individual to set up his own venture and create job opportunity for others. This needs human resources with quality to offer services, having the strength and ability to stand pressure at time, i.e. skill, planning, vision and innovation, she said.
In his welcome address, the Joint Secretary-cum-Director (Ind.), Shri M N Murali said that entrepreneur has a leading role in economic development. This seminar aimed at creating entrepreneurship temperament among the youth and students to take up self-employment.
The inaugural session concluded with the vote of thanks, proposed by Shri A. Sinha Roy, Executive Officer, A&NIKVIB.
Later, a technical session was held in which resource persons from different departments and organizations presented their papers on how to set up own enterprises, agriculture based industries, poultry farming, incentives for MSME, forest based industries and business opportunity through tourism. The seminar is scheduled to conclude tomorrow.
