Port Blair, July 18: Fire Service Jawans today demonstrated exceptional skills to rescue Vanraja, a 10 year old elephant of ANIFPDCL from an under-construction Dam of Kadamtala, Middle Andaman.
According to reports elephants of the area usually visit the Dam site for consuming water but nearly two days back when Vanraja entered the Dam for consuming water, it got trapped inside the Dam.
At Kadamtala APWD is presently constructing a Dam, which has a depth of nearly 6-7 feet. Two days back when Vanraja entered the water body, it was carrying three heavy iron-chains, one each in front and rear leg while there was another long chain on the neck. The chain which was fixed to Vanraja’s neck somehow got trapped around a tree, for which Vanraja was unable to come out of the Dam.
As soon as the Fire Services Jawans reached the spot after getting request from Forest Department they reportedly began cutting the iron chain with the help of manual cutter but that made Vanraja restless making it difficult for the Fire Services Jawans to rescue the Elephant.
Later hydraulic cutters were used by Fire Services, which make less noise to keep the elephant calm during the rescue operation. Later after several hours the chain was cut and Vanraja was brought out of the water body. Entire operation was carried out with help of the Mahaut.
