Port Blair, June 30: The transport scenario in the Havelock Island, a favorite tourist destination of the Islands was reviewed by the Lt. Governor at a meeting at Raj Niwas here today.
A presentation was made to the Lt Governor by the Principal Secretary (Transport). The Lt Governor directed the Transport Department to ensure that centralized parking is created at various places like Havelock jetty, Havelock market and near Radhanagar and Kalapathar beaches. He directed all these parking areas should have appropriate sinages made from eco-friendly locally available materials and would be maintained and manned in proper manner by the PRIs and equipped with basic amenities. Appropriate charges may be levied for such parking areas.
The Lt. Governor further directed that in order to ensure hindrance free movement of vehicles, a proper traffic movement plan would be devised, specially near the Jetty area. Directions were issued for creation of good facility at the Havelock jetty which would consist of all basic amenities, immigration facilities, pre-paid cab booking counters, tourist information counter etc. Besides, adequate Police and Traffic Personnel would be deployed to ensure adherence to law and for assistance to the visiting tourists. Directions were also issued that cycle tracks & footpaths are fully and properly utilized.
The District Administration and Police were asked to ensure that garbage is not dumped in an unorganized manner by hotel owners, shop keepers as well as tourists. Commissioner, Food Safety was directed to ensure that proper hygiene is maintained by all who are involved in the food business. Use of ‘Green’ vehicles such as battery operated and hybrid vehicles would be encouraged to ensure a pollution free tourist destination. A study to assess the impact of pollution and carrying capacity of Havelock Island would be undertaken by the Andaman Pollution Control Committee. The entire project in this regard in Havelock would be supervised and coordinated by the Assistance Commissioner, Havelock.
