Port Blair, Mar 26: The Mazaar Foreshore road has become a great hit among drunkards and anti-social elements. Recent death of P Gopi, a seaman, under mysterious circumstances, is enough to prove that how bad is the situation in that stretch of road. Those who use the walk-away, built along the foreshore road leading to science centre from Sinclair Hotel, for evening walk, complain that the road is slowly becoming unsafe for them.
“Everyday we can see several groups of people sitting on the walk-away and consuming liquor. Most of them open all doors of their car and convert the car into a makeshift bar. Often under the influence of liquor they try create scene with others. Broken bottles and empty packets of edibles are enough to prove this,” said a Port Blairian.
Though PCR vans often cross the road for patrolling but it takes just a minute to pack all edibles and liquor inside their cars.
“Not only this, as the entire stretch of the road is poorly illuminated lot of desperate love birds frequent the area and often they indulge in immoral activities. This is the reason why most of the people avoid using the road with family members,” said another islander, who goes for walking at Mazaar Pahar and science centre route.
Most of these people who indulge themselves in immoral activities, often select such places to sit, from where they can see PCR van approaching. To catch these people red handed the Andaman and Nicobar police must depute police teams in plain cloths. The PBMC and Electricity Department must also take steps to put more street lights on the said road stretch. Until and unless concrete steps are taken to free the road from the clutch of these anti-social elements, Port Blair city will keep witnessing incidents like P Gopi’s death.
