World Environment Day 2014 is being observed in these islands alongwith the rest of the world on 5 June 2014. The occasion reminds us of the importance of environment for our own well-being as well as of our duty to protect the same for posterity.
The theme for the year is “Small Island and Climate Change”. Climate change is a real and serious threat to the environment, and Islands, like ours, having a unique and fragile eco-system are highly susceptible to changes like loss of biodiversity, rising of sea level, melting of icebergs in southern and northern hemisphere, all of which have assumed large proportions and need to be addressed seriously.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are bestowed with bounty of nature and unparallel greenery and it is the prime responsibility of the Islanders to preserve and protect the nature and environment of these Islands.
I thank the people of Andaman & Nicobar Islands for their valuable support and cooperation in protecting the forests and coastal stretches of these Islands in such good shape. On this occasion, let us rededicate ourselves to this noble cause of protecting our environment.
Lt Gen (Retd) A.K. Singh
