Port Blair, June 03: Thousands of public arrive and depart from Phoenix Bay and Fisheries Jetty almost everyday but due to lack of proper amenities these passengers, especially women, elderly persons and physically challenged people have to suffer a lot.
Earlier one used to witness large number of Porters inside the Jetty Complex but now the number of such Baggage Carriers has also reduced.
In the name of Security the CRPF officials do not allow Taxi and Auto Ricksaws to enter inside the Port area and hence one has to carry his/her own luggage inside the Jetty Complex. Worst hit are aged and physically challenged people, who have to look for help from others.
Earlier a Battery Bus was operated for the convenience of passengers but the bus has also vanished in thin air.
“Firstly we have to carry all luggage from lower deck to upper deck of vessels and then we have to carry all luggage upto the gate, which is a tiring task. For ladies and aged people, this is very difficult,” said an angry passenger.
To deal with this problem the PMB must introduce Trolleys in Jetty Premises so that it becomes easy for passengers to carry their luggage. When even Shopping Malls provide Trolleys for customers, why can’t PMB do so?
A large number trolleys could be seen dumped and weathering in Airport area, atleast those Trolleys can be temporarily repaired and used in Phoenix Bay and Fisheries Jetty complex for passengers.
