
Administration making best efforts to upgrade sports facilities in isles; multipurpose stadium to come up at Wimberlygunj: LG
Port Blair, May 18: The Administration is making best efforts to upgrade the sports facilities to ensure that sports in these Islands develop further, said the Lt. Governor, Lt. General (Retd) A K Singh, while speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of the two-day swimming competition held at Swimming Pool, Netaji Sports Complex here this evening. The First Lady of these Islands, Smt. Suneeti Singh, the Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, the Director General of Police, Shri Sudhir Yadav, the Chairperson PBMC, Shri K. Ganeshan, the Chairperson SSWB, Smt. Ratna Kannan, the Chief Captain Tribal Council, Shri Aberdeen Blair, Senior officials of the Defence and Civil Administration and a good number of general public witnessed some of the final events of the swimming competition.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Lt. Governor said that the A&N Administration is giving special attention to upgrade sports facilities for which many sports infrastructures are being created. A multipurpose stadium is being developed in Nicobar while another multipurpose stadium will come up at Wimberlygunj, the Lt. Governor added. The Lt. Governor further stated that the services of coaches in different disciplines have been made available for the benefit of the sportspersons and the youths of these Islands. With the coming up of the sports projects and the services of the coaches available in different disciplines, sports in these islands will see new heights in the coming years, the Lt. Governor added.
The Lt. Governor also complimented the Sports Department for organizing various competitions including this swimming competition. Such competitions not only provide an opportunity for the youth to take part but it also enables them to realize their worth and prepare themselves for future competitions, the Lt. Governor added. The Lt. Governor directed the Sports Department to conduct sports competitions periodically in different disciplines so that more youths can participate in these events and give their best performance.
The Lt. Governor gave away prizes to the winners of the 50 mtrs men open Category (free style) while the First Lady of these Islands, Smt. Suneeti Singh gave away prizes to the winners 50 mtrs women open Category (free style).
In the 50 mtrs men open category (free style) competition, Saw Cheku from Mayabunder stood first and became the fastest swimmer in this category in isles while PD Barua and Dilli Rao stood second and third respectively.
Similarly, in the 50 mtrs women open category (free style), Holika of A&N Police stood first and became the fastest swimmer in this category in isles while Divya Kumari, a student of M/B College and Neelam Madhuri Minj of SAI stood second and third respectively.
