Port Blair, Apr 21: Every year during summer vacations thousands of people visit Mainland India. Though a good number of people choose to fly, there are thousands of others, who have no other options than travelling in ships to Mainland India.
Sadly this is the time, when every year most of the ships of Andaman and Nicobar Administration either remain out of service or are sent for Annual Survey, leaving common man in high sea.
At present in almost every sector there is shortage of ship, forcing public to wait for long for their Mainland Journey and even if there is a sailing, getting tickets becomes impossible due to heavy rush.
The question is why the Shipping Department can’t ensure that the Annual Surveys are done much before Summer Vacation? Why every year there is a shortage of ship in Mainland Island sector?
When Contacted Mr. Veraiah, the Deputy Director of Shipping Services told Andaman Sheekha that presently Annual Survey of MV Nancowry and MV Harshavardhana is going on and DSS is trying to get this ships back within this month. He said that to ensure that he Survey work is done in speedy manner the Director of Shipping Services has gone to Mumbai. He said that MV Akbar is out of service because of some technical fault and DSS is waiting for some spare parts from Mainland for the repair of the ship.
