Port Blair, Jan 27: The Republic Day nightmare continues for Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This time the nightmarish news came from Karmorta Island, where during unfurling of the National Flag at the Indira Park area of Kamorta, the rusted metal hook at the top of the mast broke and the flag fell on the ground.
Andaman Sheekha contacts many officials at Karmorta but all are tight-lipped in this regard. But highly placed sources confirmed that the mast was painted by APWD a few days before the Republic Day Celebration at Karmorta. But instead of changing the rusted hook the workers of APWD preferred to put thick coat of paint on the hook to hide the fact, which resulted in this accident.
The hook was looking so new that even the constable who climbed up to put the rope through the hook, could not make out that the hook is weak. Finally when the Assistant Commissioner of Nancowry Islands Mr. Arun Kumar Jha pulled the rope, the flag came down on the ground.
