Port Blair, Dec 04: Hundreds of fishermen, including ladies, today protested in front of Building of Directorate of Health Services after death of a 35 years old lady, Smti Puniyawati, W/o Mr. Joga Rao, R/o Junglighat at the G B Pant Hospital following a surgery for appendix yesterday.
Agitating fishermen demanded postmortem examination from doctors outside DHS with proper video-graphy of the postmortem. They also demanded a monitory compensation to the family of the deceased and job to one member to the family member of the deceased in GB Pant Hospital.
In the afternoon a delegation of fishermen met the Director of Health Services but that yielded no results even after an hour long discussion. The protest continued till evening when protesters went upto Secretariat. The protest caused road blockage, traffic diversion and inconvenience to public. The fishermen have also reportedly visited many shops and asked them to close down the shop tomorrow in support of the protest.
Meanwhile the Lt. Governor has already ordered an inquiry and promised ex-gratia amount to the next of the deceased but still protesters are planning to continue their protest tomorrow demanding proper postmortem.
