Port Blair, Sept. 30: Every year, 1st October is celebrated all over the world as International Day of the Elderly. The basic idea behind these celebrations is to recognize the services rendered by the Senior Citizens, to sensitize the society at large about the problems and needs of the older persons, and to reiterate the government’s commitment towards the cause of the elderly.
The Department of Social Welfare shall celebrate the occasion in a befitting manner in collaboration with Directorate of Health Services and PRIs. To mark the occasion, health camps will be organized with the help of DHS at Old Age Home, Ferrargunj from 9 to 11 am followed by cultural programmes and light refreshment. Similar programme will be organized at Diglipur, Mayabunder, Rangat, Car Nicobar, Kamorta and Campbell Bay by the respective CDPOs.
The senior citizens of Andaman & Nicobar Islands have been requested to participate in the celebrations of the Elderly Day on 1st October, 2013 in their respective areas, a communication received here said.
