Port Blair, Aug 01: The A & N State unit of CPI(M) has sent a SOS letter to the Prime Minister of India regarding decreasing number of MBBS Seats of A & N Islands and demanded 40 MBBS and 5 BDS seats.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister the Secretary of CPI(M), Mr. K G Das has drawn the attention of the PM towards the injustice being meted out to the children of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the matter of medical education in the Medical Colleges on the mainland.
“As you may kindly be aware, the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands does not have a Medical College and the candidates who pass out the Class XII examination from the schools of these islands are considered for allotment of MBBS and BDS seats out of the earmarked quota of central pool for the States/UTs which do not have Medical Colleges,” Mr. K G Das said in his letter.
He added that till the academic year 2011-12, 18 MBBS seats and 2 BDS seats were being allotted to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands which were insufficient to meet the aspirations of the growing number of children here. While a demand for an increased number of Medical Seats was raised from all quarters including CPI (M), the Ministry of Health, Govt. Of India drastically reduced the number of MBBS seats from 18 to 15 during the academic session 2012-13 which was a shock to the candidates who were expecting an increased number of seats.
“This year also, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has taken up the matter with the Ministry of Health, Govt. Of India for a substantial increase in the number of MBBS seats for these islands. However, the Ministry of Health has reportedly rejected the request of the A & N Administration which has created a flutter among the youths of these islands. We have learnt that the Ministry of Health is in the process of finalising the allotments of the central pool/earmarked quota seats and only your intervention will yield any positive result in this matter,” he added.
Mr. Das in his letter has requested the PM to examine this matter and direct the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. Of India, to allot atleast 40 MBBS and 5 BDS seats as requested by the A & N Administration, for the candidates of these most backward and far-flung territory of our country.
Instead of asking 40 seats.. Let All parties demand for engineering collage and medical collage.. if both will come lot of people will be benefited . Instead of merge number 40.. Inter island people will also benefited.. It shame for islander it will now only the union territory which does have any eng. and medical collages.. So poor people also get benefited for treatment also..
Hope Andaman Sheekha takes to this matter to all parties..
