Port Blair, July 07: A Children’s Park, set up at Govt. Demonstration Multipurpose School (GDMS), Primary, Middle Point, Port Blair nearly six years ago, spending several lakhs of rupees, today look deserted. Due to lack of maintenance and use all the equipments are gathering rust as well as dust. Once the park was bustling with children but now the park is dominated by poisonous snakes and insects. Wild grasses have grown taller than little children and hence out of fear no student of GDMS Primary, dares to venture inside the said park.
Govt. Demonstration Multipurpose School (GDMS), Primary, Middle Point, Port Blair was established with an aim to provide mutual benefit to the school students as well as the trainee teachers of Tagore Govt. College of Education which is one of the two available education colleges of these Islands.
The school maintained high standards in education, overall development of student, cleanliness etc. when it was directly under the control of TGCE. The school was handed over to the Directorate of Education nearly three years ago after which all hell broke loose in the school.
Further, all the toilet blocks of the school are flooded with human waste, which could trigger an epidemic anytime. It was alleged by the parents that the toilets are not maintained properly since the school was handed over to the Education Department. Further Andaman Sheekha on investigation found out that there is just one sweeper for seven hundred students of the school and hence even after giving her best she is unable to keep the school clean.
The school building is also reported to have loose wirings hanging from the walls which could anytime electrocute innocent children of the school.
The mockery is that recently nearly Rs.11 lakhs were sanctioned for the maintenance of the school but major amount was spend for repairing the basketball court of the school, as that was one of the venue for a National Level Basket Ball Tournament of IAS Officers.
In earlier edition Andaman Sheekha had highlighted that how the IT Centre of the same school has now become graveyard of computers.
Both the IT Centre and the Park of the School was inaugurated by the Lt. Governor as such high profile inauguration guarantees all the privileges but sadly in Education Department purchasing always remain as main mantra after which for reasons best known to everybody, officials forget to maintain equipments.
