Port Blair, Jul 17: Van Mahotsav, the festival of planting trees and creating awareness on afforestration and the ill effects of deforestation is being observed by the Forest Department of the Islands at different places with the general public and the students.
The month long celebration by the Department of Forest and Environment has sensationalized different sections of the society on the importance of forests in our lives.
In this connection the Department of Forest branch at Mayabunder conducted a plantation programme at MGGC, Mayabunder in the presence of Dr. R.N. Rath, Principal, Staffs and Students of the college.
Along with the plantation programme the regional forest department there also conducted a vibrant quiz competition for the college students which further made them aware on several issues pertaining to the environment, forests and about our emerald Islands.
More than 550 students, professors and other staffs of the college witnessed the quiz competition as spectators. Altogether 16 participants participated in the competition in which three teams were from MGGC and one from the Technical and Vocational Training Extension centre, Maybunder.
The Quiz Competition was conducted under the supervision of Mr. P.A. Mazid, ACF (Mayabunder), Mr. Jaison John, Ranger and Mr. Lalita Singh, Ranger (Mayabunder).
Altogether the quiz comprised of 88 questions and was completed in four rounds with the last round being a Rapid Fire Round. The Quiz Master for the quiz was Mr. Jaison John, Ranger. Most of the questions were related to Forestry, Wild Life and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The first prize in the quiz competition was bagged by the commerce stream of MGGC (Miss. Radha, Mr. M. Rajesh Kumar and Mr. G. Vinoth), the Second position was bagged by the students of Technical and Vocational Training Centre ( Mr. Besty Francis, Mr. Sushant Kujur & Mr. Arun Pragadesh) and third position was bagged by (Mr. Pradip Halder, Miss. Varsha Yadav and Mr. Josheph Toppo) another team from MGGC.
Mr. P.A. Mazid, ACF, on the occasion declared that the prizes to the winners will be distributed on 30th of July 2013 at Mayabunder Conference Hall on the eve of concluding day of the Month long Programme.
