Port Blair, July 11: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nicobar in collaboration with Dept. of AH & VS, Car Nicobar has organized a 3 (three) day training programme on “Scientific Pig Farming” for Practicing Farmers of Big Lapathy village from 3rd – 5th July, 2013 at Big Lapathy, Car Nicobar. The training was organized under the guidance of Dr. Nagesh Ram, Programme Coordinator I/c & Course Coordinator and facilitated by Dr. Zachariah George, SMS (A.Sc.), KVK-Nicobar. During the inaugural session the Chief Guest, Shri. Manua Thomas, 1st Headman, Big Lapathy highlighted the importance of pigs in socio-cultural and economic status of Nicobarese and appealed to the trainees for their active participation for harnessing maximum benefit from the training.
The Guest of Honor, Dr. A.K. Bardhan, SVO, Dept. of AH & VS, Car Nicobar explained different schemes available in the Department and highlighted the importance of pig in converting waste into high quality protein. He also called upon the farmers to get maximum benefit from the schemes and sought cooperation from the farmers for successfully undertaking vaccination programme for controlling dreaded disease of pigs – ‘Swine Fever’ in Car Nicobar.
The Special Guests, Shri. Fullbert Wilfred, 2nd Headman and Shri. Leslie Henry, 4th Headman, Big Lapathy also graced the occasion. During the three days, the trainees were imparted with the knowledge and skill on different aspects of scientific pig farming like different systems of pig farming, common diseases of pig and its management with special reference to prevention of Zoonosis, feeds & feeding, importance of Azolla as feed substitute, importance of housing, etc. in interactive cum participatory mode. A total of 32 farmers were trained which included 8 male and 24 female. Earlier, Dr. V.N. Singh, SMS (Horti.), welcomed the gathering and assured KVK-Nicobar’s commitment towards development of agriculture and allied sector as a whole in Nicobar district. Dr. Zachariah George extended vote-of-thanks.
