Sri Vijaya Puram, October 25: With the objective of building a tsunami-aware and disaster-resilient community, an outreach activity under the Tsunami Ready Programme was conducted at the Sippighat Gram Panchayat Learning Centre yesterday. The programme was organised by the Gram Panchayat of Sippighat in coordination with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), South Andaman District.
The activity witnessed encouraging participation, with more than 30 village community members attending alongside representatives of the Police Department, trained teachers, and Panchayat representatives.
A key component of the programme was the distribution of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials among the villagers.
As part of the baseline data collection exercise under the Tsunami Ready Programme, the geographical coordinates of identified tsunami-safe areas and Government buildings in the village were collected for documentation and preparedness planning. The existing village-level disaster response plan was also examined, reviewed and updated to reflect local requirements and strengthen emergency response arrangements.
