
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 01: The Directorate of Social Welfare, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, organized a series of activities on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons 2026, with the objective of promoting respect, dignity, social participation and healthy and active ageing among senior citizens. On this occasion, a day-long programme was organized for the residents of Ulhas Home, comprising recreational activities, social interaction, distribution of gifts, community lunch and an excursion.
Shri Hemant Kumar, Secretary (Social Welfare), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Shri Mohit Mishra, Director (Social Welfare), Dr. Bibhash Haldar, Andaman IVF and Fertility Centre, Smt. Otri Samaddar, Admin Head, Andaman IVF and Fertility Centre, along with representatives of the Andaman Tour Operators Association and various tour operators, were present as Special Guests.
The programme commenced with a cake-cutting ceremony with the elderly residents. On the occasion, Gift Hampers were distributed to all the residents of Ulhas Home on behalf of the Directorate of Social Welfare. The elderly residents enthusiastically participated in singing and dancing and added to the joy and vibrancy of the celebrations. The guests and officials of the Department also interacted and participated with the elderly residents, creating an atmosphere of warmth, companionship and togetherness.
As part of the International Day of Older Persons celebrations, various organizations and stakeholders came forward to provide useful items for the welfare and comfort of the residents of Ulhas Home.
The Andaman Tour Operators Association contributed 60 bedsheets, Arun Hospital contributed 20 mattresses and 20 bedsheets, while the Andaman IVF and Fertility Centre contributed one refrigerator, one OTG and two geysers for Ulhas Home.
The Directorate of Social Welfare expressed its sincere appreciation to all the organizations and stakeholders for their valuable support and contribution towards the welfare of older persons. Such community participation reflects the collective responsibility and sensitivity of society towards ensuring the dignity, comfort and well-being of senior citizens.
Following the programme, the elderly residents were taken to Yellow Garden Restaurant for a community lunch. Thereafter, they were taken on an excursion covering the Heritage Site, the Statue of Lord Shiva and Corbyn’s Cove.
The excursion provided the elderly residents an opportunity to spend quality time outside their regular surroundings and enjoy recreational, social, spiritual and cultural experiences in a pleasant and inclusive environment.
Throughout the day, the elderly residents participated with great enthusiasm and joy. They sang songs, danced and actively participated in the various activities organized for them. Their enthusiasm, smiles and cheerful participation added a special warmth to the celebrations.
The International Day of Older Persons celebration was not merely a ceremonial event, but became a meaningful occasion of respect, affection, social participation and community support. The programme reaffirmed the importance of recognizing senior citizens as valued members of society and of ensuring their dignity, well-being and meaningful participation in community life.
