Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 1 : The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), a flagship programme of the Government of India has completed five years of its national rollout on 27th September, 2026. The Mission seeks to create a digital healthcare ecosystem that enables the seamless and consent-based exchange of health information. Over the past five years, ABDM has progressively established the foundational digital infrastructure required for a connected healthcare ecosystem through key building blocks such as the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), Health Facility Registry (HFR), Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR) and other interoperable digital health services.
The UT of Andaman & Nicobar Islands has been closely associated with the digital health transformation journey from its early stages. The Union Territory was among the six Union Territories where the National Digital Health Mission (NDHM) was launched on pilot basis in August 2020, prior to the nationwide launch of ABDM on 27th September, 2021. The implementation of ABDM has been steadily strengthened across the Islands, with focused efforts towards the registration of public and private healthcare facilities and health professionals under HFR and HPR, the creation of ABHA, and the adoption of ABDM-enabled HMIS across healthcare facilities.
South Andaman has also been identified as an ABDM Model District, with concerted efforts being undertaken to accelerate the adoption of digital health services across public and private healthcare facilities of the district.
The implementation of ABDM-enabled HMIS, Scan & Share services and ABHA-based registration across healthcare facilities in the Islands is enhancing citizen-centric digital healthcare delivery. Through ABHA, a unique digital health identity, citizens can securely link and access their health records generated across different healthcare providers through ABDM-enabled systems. Further, digital services such as Scan & Share facilitate convenient and queue-less registration at participating healthcare facilities, thereby promoting a gradual shift from conventional paper-based processes towards a more efficient, seamless and digitally enabled healthcare ecosystem.
The focus now is on deepening adoption, strengthening interoperability, improving digital health service delivery, and ensuring that the benefits of ABDM reach citizens across urban, rural and geographically dispersed areas.
The five-year milestone of ABDM is not merely a celebration of the digital infrastructure created over the years, but also a reaffirmation of the collective commitment towards building a citizen-centric, connected, interoperable and digitally empowered healthcare system.
The Programme Management Unit (PMU), ABDM, Directorate of Health Services, A&N Administration, in coordination with the National Health Authority, Government of India, and other stakeholders, remains committed to further strengthening the digital health ecosystem in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
