Ograbraj, September 30: The Directorate of Social Welfare, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, in collaboration with Elder Helpline 14567, celebrated the International Day of Older Persons 2026 at Ograbraj Community Hall on30 September with the participation of around 220 senior citizens and their family members.
Celebrated on the theme “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”, the programme highlighted the importance of dignity, health, active participation and social inclusion of older persons. A range of recreational and cultural activities, including games, singing, dancing, ramp walk, talent hunt, wooden crafts, coconut-shell artwork and culinary activities, were organised, creating an atmosphere of joy and togetherness.
Shri Mohit Mishra, Director, Directorate of Social Welfare, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and highlighted the valuable contribution of senior citizens to families and society, emphasising the need for a caring and supportive environment for older persons.
The programme was also graced by Dr. Manju Nair, Admin Head, Arun Hospital; Smti. Otri Samaddar, Admin Head, IVF Centre, Arun Hospital; Pradhan Shri Mohammed Shafique; and Pradhan Shri Amrit Raj Anand as Guests of Honour. Dr. Manju Nair interacted with senior citizens and shared valuable insights on maintaining good health and well-being during old age.
A Health Services Help Desk and Elder Helpline 14567 Awareness Desk provided information on health services and support available to senior citizens. Gifts were also distributed to senior citizens as a gesture of appreciation and respect.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Smti. Sushma Pandey, Project Manager, Elder Helpline 14567, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, departments, senior citizens, families, volunteers and stakeholders for their valuable participation.
The celebration conveyed the message that ageing is not merely about growing older, but about continuing to participate, connect and live with dignity, happiness and purpose.
