Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 29: The City Congress Committee, Sri Vijaya Puram on 28th september,2026 organised a massive and historic rally at Sri Vijaya Puram under the organisation and dynamic leadership of Mohammed Zubair, President, City Congress Committee, Sri Vijaya Puram. The rally commenced from Delanipur Junction and marched towards Gandhi Statue, Sri Vijaya Puram.
The protest was led by Mohammed Zubair and was attended by Mr. Rangalal Halder, President, Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC), Mr. TSG Bhaskar, Chairman, Campaign Committee, ANTCC, District Congress Committee President Mr. John Robert Babu, Mahila Congress President Mrs. Zubaida Begum along with BCC President’s, Heads of all Frontal and Departmental, Councillors of SVPMC, PRI Members, senior leaders and more than 300 Congress party workers and supporters. The rally witnessed huge public support with slogans to save democracy and protect the Constitution.
On the way, in front of the Headquarter of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council, the Andaman and Nicobar Police tried to stop and block the rally in an undemocratic manner. Strongly protesting against this attempt to suppress the voice of the people, all Congress workers sat on the road and started strong sloganeering against the Chief Election Commissioner and the central government. The workers sat on dharna for a long time, making it clear that Congress will not be intimidated by police action.
After prolonged discussion and due to the firm stand of Congress workers, the Police finally agreed and allowed the Congress party workers to proceed to Gandhi Statue.
The main demand of the protest was immediate resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Addressing the gathering, the leaders said that under the leadership of Gyanesh Kumar, the Election Commission of India, which is a constitutional institution, is working as an agent of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has been misused to delete lakhs of genuine voters belonging to minorities, Dalits and weaker sections to give undue advantage to BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and other states. This is a clear case of Vote Chori as exposed by the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Mr. Rahul Gandhi with concrete proofs.
It is also a matter of serious concern that as per a report published in The Indian Express, two sitting Election Commissioners Mr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Mr. Vivek Joshi have objected on record at least 14 times in the last ten months against the arbitrary and unilateral decisions of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The objections include illegal amendment of statutory Form-6 used for voter registration, arbitrary handling of additions and deletions from voter lists and centralized control over the entire electoral roll database without taking the full commission into confidence. This has destroyed the collective functioning of the Election Commission.
The leaders further said that Gyanesh Kumar is being protected by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP-RSS ecosystem so that he can continue to implement SIR and manage elections from 2025 Bihar to 2026 West Bengal-Assam and 2027 Uttar Pradesh. If the Election Commission itself is compromised, then democracy cannot survive. Congress workers across the country from Jammu & Kashmir to Jharkhand, Assam to Telangana are on the streets demanding his resignation.
The City Congress Committee reiterated that this fight is not political but a fight to save democracy, to save the right to vote and to save the Constitution of India. The protest will continue across the islands till Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns from his post and is prosecuted as per law. The rally concluded peacefully at Gandhi Statue after paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
