Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 10: The Directorate of Disaster Management (DDM), A&N Administration, in coordination with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), MoES, GoI, Hyderabad organized a two-day Workshop on the Tsunami Ready Programme in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands today at the Training Hall of Aapda Prabandhan Bhawan, Directorate of Disaster Management, A&N Administration, Sri Vijaya Puram.
The Day-1 programme was attended by officials from all District Administrations, Line Departments and members of the District and Village-level Tsunami Ready Committees with the objective of strengthening tsunami preparedness, enhancing institutional coordination and building community resilience in vulnerable coastal areas.
The Secretary (Disaster Management), A&N Administration, Smti Pallavi Sarkar graced the occasion as the chief guest and delivered the inaugural address. She emphasized the need for coordinated efforts by the District Administrations, Line Departments and community-level committees for effective implementation of the Tsunami Ready Programme and strengthening preparedness at the grassroots level.
Earlier, the programme commenced with the inaugural session wherein the Director (Disaster Management), A&N Administration, Smti Priyanka Kumari delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the importance of strengthening tsunami preparedness and coordinated action among all stakeholders. The Director, INCOIS, Hyderabad, Dr. T. M. Balakrishnan Nair delivered the welcome address virtually and emphasized the significance of the Tsunami Ready Programme in enhancing community preparedness and resilience against tsunami hazards.
The inaugural session was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shri Janik Ram, Assistant Director (Admn.), Directorate of Disaster Management. The technical sessions thereafter covered an Overview of Tsunami Hazard and the Tsunami Early Warning System in India, followed by detailed sessions on the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Programme, its indicators and implementation framework, and assessment of Tsunami Ready indicators.
The participants were further sensitized on Tsunami Ready preparedness and response, as well as the documentation and evidence required for Tsunami Ready Recognition. A session on the Status of the Tsunami Ready Programme in the A&N Islands: Progress, Gaps and Way Forward was also conducted, providing an opportunity to review the progress made and identify areas requiring further action.
The Day-1 programme concluded with an interactive discussion, clarifications and action plan for implementation.
