Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 1: Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC) Campaign Committee Chairman Mr. G. Bhasker has urged the Andaman & Nicobar Administration to address difficulties being faced by cargo transport drivers following the installation of a weighbridge at Mile Tilak for checking overloading of cargo vehicles.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary, Mr. Bhasker acknowledged the importance of checking overloading but said cargo transport drivers were facing practical difficulties under the present system. He stated that even a few kilograms of additional weight were not being permitted and fines were reportedly being imposed on drivers.
Mr. Bhasker said the situation was particularly difficult in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where transportation of goods to North and Middle Andaman already faces several challenges. He pointed out that the NH-4 road is in poor condition and argued that requiring vehicles to strictly operate within the prescribed capacity could further increase transportation costs and ultimately raise the prices of goods for the public.
He also expressed concern that many people were already facing difficulties travelling to North and Middle Andaman due to the viability issues of transportation services. According to him, the livelihood of a large number of people could also be affected, potentially creating a difficult situation.
The ANTCC leader requested the Administration to consider enforcing the rules in a more practical manner, keeping in view the difficult terrain and prevailing transportation conditions in the islands. He further suggested that the NH-4 road should first be improved by directing the NHIDCL to take necessary corrective measures.
Mr. Bhasker also requested the Chief Secretary to convene a meeting involving all stakeholders, including the Grain Dealers and Grocers Association, Andaman & Nicobar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, North & Middle Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other concerned stakeholders, to find an amicable solution.
In the meantime, he appealed that punitive action against cargo transport drivers be kept in abeyance until the matter is discussed and a practical solution is worked out.
