Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 27: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) conducted a Demonstration Programme on Silage Making under UT-ATMA 2026–27 on 27th August 2026 at the field of Mr. Prakash Das, Guptapara village, South Andaman.
The programme was attended by Mr. Durlab Das, Gram Pradhan, Guptapara Gram Panchayat, along with dairy farmers of the locality. During the programme, the farmers were sensitised about the importance of silage as a method of conserving green fodder for use during periods of fodder scarcity, its advantages in dairy animal feeding, and the basic principles involved in the preparation and storage of good-quality silage.
A practical demonstration of silage preparation was carried out by Mr. Abdul Enayat, Agriculture Demonstrator, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services. The participants were shown the various steps involved, including chopping of green fodder, addition of required ingredients, proper compaction, removal of air and airtight packing of the fodder in polythene bags for fermentation and preservation.
Around six to seven dairy farmers participated in the programme and interacted with the technical team regarding fodder conservation and feeding practices. Necessary inputs were also provided during the demonstration. Fodder stem cuttings were distributed to interested farmers to encourage fodder cultivation and improve the availability of green fodder at the farm level.
The programme aimed at promoting scientific fodder conservation practices and year-round availability of quality fodder for dairy animals, thereby supporting economical and sustainable dairy farming in the area, a press release from Dept. of AH&VS said.
