Port Blair, Jun 24: Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, President, PCC showing his concern over the volatile future of the unemployed youth of these Islands met Lt. Governor today and demanded unemployment allowance for them.
In his letter to the Lt. Governor, Mr. Sharma wrote that at present, as per the records of the local Employment exchange, total 42,047 unemployed youths among which 18,617 are women and 23,430 are men, are waiting for getting jobs. Apart from this there are many who are not registered but unemployed. There is yearly increase in the numbers of unemployed youth and it is mandatory to bring new avenues for them and the Administration always considers such things and it has brought many such projects for the unemployed youths, some of which for one reason or another could not either been materialized or delayed.
Mr. Sharma has also stated that these youths are passing their gloomy days under severe frustration being burden on their family members and the society. The condition of their parents, who hoped to get help from their children on their reaching the matured age are also of the same as of these youths. To overcome this situation to some extent, Mr. Sharma has requested to consider unemployment allowance @ Rs 2000/- per month to the eligible unemployed youths registered with the Employment Exchange and also to those who are not registered in Employment Exchange to have some money for their daily requirements and also to help their family members.
Mr. Sharma has also stated that in a major decision, many State Governments like UP, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bihar have extended the scope for unemployment allowance for the unemployed persons and according to which, those in general category in the age bracket of 25 to 40 years and of the reserve category in the age bracket of age bracket of 25-45 years would be eligible for the allowance. Many such Governments have also included ITI and polytechnic qualified unemployed youths for the benefit.
Mr. Sharma has thus requested that, as the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has introduced many pension and others schemes for the welfare of the people of various categories, a scheme under which unemployment allowance may also be introduced by allowing all the helpless registered in Employment Exchange and unregistered unemployed youth @ Rs 2000/- per month per unemployed youth be considered.
