Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 03: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the coming week.
According to the weather bulletin, heavy rainfall (07–11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Nicobar Islands on Aug. 5, and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on Aug. 7.
Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (50–60 kmph) and lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on Aug. 5 and Aug. 6. Similar conditions with gusty winds (50–60 kmph) and lightning are also likely at isolated places on Aug. 8.
For fishermen, squally winds with speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely to prevail along and off the Andaman & Nicobar coasts from Aug. 3 to Aug. 7. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
A Swell Surge Alert has also been issued for the Andaman and Nicobar coasts. Swell waves with a period of 16.0–18.0 seconds and a height of 1.7–1.8 metres are forecast till 11.30 pm on Aug. 4. People have been advised that surging waves are possible, and boats should ply with utmost vigilance while recreational activities near the sea should be undertaken with due caution.
The outlook for the subsequent two days indicates little change in the prevailing weather conditions.
