Sri Vijaya Puram, July 24: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman & Nicobar Administration, conducted an awareness talk on dog menace, preventive behaviour, dog bite prevention, and first aid at Government Primary School (GPS), Nanjappa Nagar on 24th July 2026.
The programme was organised with the objective of educating school children and teachers about safe behaviour around stray dogs, prevention of dog bite incidents, and the importance of prompt action in case of animal bites. A total of 43 students and 7 teachers participated in the session.
During the awareness talk, the students were educated on understanding dog behaviour and warning signs, dos and don’ts to be followed while encountering stray dogs, and the immediate steps to be taken in the event of a dog bite. Special emphasis was laid on avoiding provocation of dogs, maintaining a safe distance from unfamiliar animals, thoroughly washing the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, informing elders immediately, and seeking prompt medical attention along with Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) without delay.
The session was interactive and the participants actively engaged by asking relevant questions. The students showed keen interest in learning the practical safety measures and first aid practices. The programme also highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership and compassion towards animals while ensuring public safety.
The Department of AH&VS continues to conduct such awareness programmes in schools across the Islands to promote public health, responsible behaviour towards animals, and effective prevention of dog bites and rabies among young students and the local community, a press release from Dept. of AH&VS said.
