Sri Vijaya Puram, July 20: The Dept. of AH&VS has confirmed the outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) in Canine in Sri Vijaya Puram. Canine Distemper is a life-threatening viral disease that primarily affects unvaccinated or improperly vaccinated dogs. Early symptoms include high fever, dry nose, congested eyes, occulo-nasal discharge, coughing, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhoea. In advanced stages, it may cause neurological signs such as convulsions, chomping of the jaw, excessive salivation, jerky muscle movements (chorea), and hardening of footpads. | · Immediately isolate any dog showing symptoms of fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea, or neurological signs to prevent spread to other dogs.
· Consult a veterinarian at the earliest if your dog shows any signs of illness. Early supportive treatment significantly improves chances of recovery. · Ensure your dog is properly vaccinated. Puppies should receive the first dose between 6–8 weeks of age, followed by booster doses every 3–4 weeks until 16–20 weeks, and annual boosters thereafter. · Maintain strict hygiene in your premises. Clean food and water bowls daily and disinfect the living area regularly using mild disinfectants or a 1:20 dilution of household bleach. · Provide a soft, semi-solid or liquid diet to sick dogs. Use curd and probiotics to maintain gut health and hydration. · Keep your dog away from stray dogs and crowded public places until fully vaccinated and healthy. |
· Do not ignore early symptoms such as fever, nasal discharge, or loss of appetite. Delaying veterinary care can be fatal.
· Do not allow unvaccinated dogs to mix with other dogs or visit public parks and beaches. · Do not use over-the-counter medicines without veterinary advice, as they may worsen the condition. · Do not neglect cleaning and disinfection of the environment where an infected dog lives. · Do not allow your dog to roam freely during this period.
