Sri Vijaya Puram, July 20: The Directorate of Disaster Management, A&N Administration, through the State Control Room, has issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the next few days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata, thunderstorms with gusty winds of 30–40 kmph and lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places across the district from July 21 to July 26. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of adverse weather and avoid open areas during thunderstorms.
A Farmer Warning has also been issued by IMD Shadipur for the next five days, forecasting similar weather conditions with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph at isolated places across the islands. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions to protect crops, livestock and agricultural equipment from possible weather-related damage.
Although no Fishermen Warning has been issued for the Andaman & Nicobar coast, authorities have alerted the public about a Swell Surge expected along the coast. Swell waves with a period of 18 to 21 seconds and a height of 1.9 to 2.2 metres are forecast up to 11:30 hours on July 21.
The advisory warns that surging waves near the shoreline may occur, posing a risk to coastal areas. Small vessels have been advised not to venture into the sea, while beachgoers have been urged to avoid activities along beaches and nearshore waters. Authorities have also cautioned that nearshore erosion is possible and directed that no entry or exit of small boats should be permitted at the coastline during the advisory period.
Meanwhile, the Port Warning states that the outlook for the subsequent two days is expected to witness little change.
The Directorate of Disaster Management has appealed to residents, fishermen and tourists to follow official advisories and exercise caution until weather conditions improve.
