Sri Vijaya Puram, July 10:Expressing concern over the increasing number of road accidents on the Jirkatang–Diglipur route, the Our Rights Organisation has appealed to the Director General of Police (DGP), Andaman & Nicobar Police, to strengthen enforcement against drunken driving and ensure stricter monitoring of drivers operating on the route.
In a representation submitted to the DGP, Mr. C. Saravanan, Chairman of the Our Rights Organisation, stated that several accidents have been reported on the Jirkatang–Diglipur highway in recent times, causing widespread concern among commuters and the general public. He noted that many of these incidents have been highlighted on social media, with allegations that some drivers consume alcohol while on duty, severely affecting their ability to operate vehicles safely.
The organisation emphasized that driving under the influence of alcohol poses a serious threat not only to passengers but also to pedestrians and other road users. It urged the Police Department to introduce regular and stringent inspections of all drivers operating on the route.
The representation specifically requested that breathalyzer tests be conducted before the commencement of journeys as well as at random checkpoints during transit to ensure that no driver is under the influence of alcohol while transporting passengers. It further appealed for strict action against those found violating road safety regulations.
The organisation expressed confidence that proactive enforcement, continuous monitoring, and strict implementation of traffic safety measures by the Andaman & Nicobar Police would significantly reduce accidents and improve the safety of thousands of people travelling on the Jirkatang–Diglipur route every day.
Concluding the representation, Mr. C. Saravanan urged the Director General of Police to take immediate and appropriate action in the larger interest of public safety and road accident prevention, while expressing appreciation for the Police Department’s continued commitment to protecting the lives of citizens.
