Sri Vijaya Puram, July 5: Mr. N.K. Udhaya Kumar former Chairperson of SVPMC and State General Secretary (Organisation), HRS has urged the Andaman & Nicobar Administration to provide immediate relief, compensation and rehabilitation assistance to families affected by the recent heavy rainfall and flash floods in North & Middle Andaman.
In a representation addressed to the Lieutenant Governor, Chief Secretary, Member of Parliament, Director of Agriculture and Assistant Secretary (AR Wing), Mr. N.K. Udhaya Kumar highlighted the widespread damage caused by the incessant rains.
According to the representation, floodwaters inundated several villages, damaging residential houses, household belongings, agricultural fields, plantations, poultry farms, livestock and other sources of livelihood. The memorandum stated that many families suffered heavy financial losses after floodwaters entered their homes, damaging food grains, furniture, electrical appliances, clothing, school books and important documents, while farmers incurred substantial losses due to destruction of standing crops, vegetables and arecanut plantations.
The organisation has requested the Administration to conduct a comprehensive and transparent damage assessment through the Revenue authorities and ensure timely compensation to all eligible affected families. It has also sought immediate restoration of damaged roads, culverts, drinking water supply, electricity, drainage systems and communication networks.
Highlighting the recurring nature of flooding in vulnerable areas, the memorandum recommended preparation of a long-term flood mitigation and disaster management plan, including strengthening of embankments, desilting of drains and improvement of drainage infrastructure to minimise future damage.
Expressing confidence in the Administration’s response, Mr. Udhaya Kumar appealed for swift and compassionate action to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
