
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 28: Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded action against the officials concerned of the Indian Coast Guard who physically assaulted ten fishermen who were fishing in the North Andaman Sea on 21st and 22nd June 2026. In a letter sent to the Chief Secretary, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) A & N Organising Committee said that ten fishermen in two fishing boats, who were fishing in the North Andaman Sea, were checked by Coast Guard officials to verify their identity on 21st June, 2026. After satisfying the documents and identity of the fishermen, the Coast Guard officials left the scene and allowed the fishermen to continue fishing. CPI (M) Secretary said that on the next day, again the Coast Guard ship apprehended the same two fishing boats, took the fishermen into their custody and tortured them. Ayyappan informed the Chief Secrtary that the fishermen sustained grievous injuries. All the fishermen on their return to Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair) has undergone medical treatment.
, All these ten fishermen wer subjected to torture, harassment and mental tension by Coast Guard officials. Such harassment and torture on the part of the defence personnel on ordinary citizens cannot be accepted on whatever ground. Ayyappan informed the Chief Secretary that a kind of fear psychosis has been created among the fishermen in the islands following the highhandedness of Coast Guard officials.
Ayyappan told the Chief Secretary that action against the Coast Guard officials will instill a sense of confidence among the fishermen.
