Sri Vijaya Puram, June 17: North and Middle Andaman Zilla Parishad Adhyaksh, Mr. Alager Swamy has expressed serious concern over the reported restriction on the sale of petrol and diesel in cans and portable tanks at fuel outlets from Baratang to Diglipur regions, stating that the move could adversely affect tourism-related activities, fishermen, and other essential services across the region.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Mr. Alager Swamy said that several local youths engaged in tourism activities had approached him after allegedly being denied fuel in containers at petrol pumps over the past two days. According to him, the restriction has created uncertainty among fibre boat operators who depend on fuel purchased from petrol pumps for conducting tourism-related trips.
He questioned how boat operators, fishermen, and others requiring fuel for generators and equipment would manage if fuel could only be dispensed directly into vehicles. He pointed out that fibre boats and generator sets cannot be brought to petrol pumps in the same manner as vehicles and trucks.
The Zilla Parishad Adhyaksh stated that the reported restriction could significantly affect tourism operations, particularly boat services transporting tourists to destinations such as caves and other attractions. He warned that any disruption in fuel availability could inconvenience tourists and negatively impact the livelihoods of local youth dependent on the tourism sector.
Mr. Alager Swamy also emphasized that individuals do not generally store large quantities of fuel at home. Instead, they purchase only the amount required for immediate use. He explained that a boat operator travelling to tourist destinations may require around 20 litres of fuel and purchases only that quantity as needed.
He said he had discussed the matter with Deputy Commissioner, North and Middle Andaman and expressed hope that the issue would be resolved soon. He urged the Administration and the Chief Secretary to examine the matter urgently and restore the earlier system, ensuring that tourism activities, fishing operations, and other essential services continue without disruption.
Mr. Alager Swamy expressed confidence that any decision taken by the Administration would be in the interest of local youths and residents while ensuring that tourists visiting the islands do not face any inconvenience.
