Sri Vijaya Puram, June 3: Raising concerns over public safety and connectivity in Diglipur, Gram Panchayat Radhanagar Pradhan Mrs. Nilima Samadder has urged the authorities to immediately repair a damaged steel footpath bridge connecting PHC Radhanagar with Saso Katai village.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mrs. Samadder said that the bridge serves as an important shortcut route for residents of Burmachad, Saso Katai and Radhanagar Ward No. 01. According to her, the bridge is used daily by school students, patients visiting the Primary Health Centre and commuters traveling to catch public transport. She said the collapse of the structure has created serious difficulties for local residents and has disrupted safe movement in the area.
Mrs. Samadder informed that the issue had already been taken up with the authorities through a formal representation. In a letter addressed to the Member of Parliament, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, she requested urgent intervention for the repair and restoration of the small steel footpath bridge, which was reportedly constructed under the MPLAD scheme between PHC Radhanagar and Saso Katai.
According to the letter, the bridge was severely damaged during heavy rainfall on the night of June 1, 2025, after large trees reportedly fell on the structure, leading to its collapse. The Panchayat stated that the bridge is a vital connectivity link for villagers and its restoration is essential to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare, education and transportation services.
The Pradhan further stated that timely repair of the bridge would greatly benefit school children, commuters and medical service users. She appealed to the concerned departments to take immediate steps to restore the structure before the onset of heavier monsoon conditions.
