Sri Vijaya Puram, May 11: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad Andaman & Nicobar Islands has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration demanding an immediate increase in the stipend amount for inter-island students pursuing higher education in colleges across the islands.
In the letter, ABVP highlighted that students studying in institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya, Andaman College, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology and other colleges are currently receiving only ₹1500 per month as stipend, which has remained unchanged for several years despite the rising cost of living.
The organization stated that the present stipend amount is insufficient to cover basic expenses such as food, accommodation, transportation and study materials. ABVP further pointed out that many students from remote islands and economically weaker backgrounds are forced to take up part-time labour work to continue their studies, affecting their academic performance and well-being.
Through the memorandum, ABVP has demanded that the monthly stipend be increased from ₹1500 to at least ₹5000 and urged the Administration to implement the revised amount immediately. The organization also requested the formation of a mechanism for periodic revision of stipends based on inflation and economic conditions.
The memorandum was submitted by Satyajit Halder, Secretary, ABVP Andaman & Nicobar Islands, who appealed to the Administration to take urgent steps in the interest of the student community.
