Sri Vijaya Puram, May 7: A major accident was narrowly averted after a massive tree fell near the Haddo seashore area in Ward No. 2 yesterday, causing minor damage to a nearby house but fortunately leaving no one injured.
According to local residents, the tree had long been identified as dangerous and complaints had been raised with the concerned authorities earlier. The Ward Councillor had also reportedly taken up the issue, but no preventive action was initiated in time.
Following the incident, the Forest Department took charge and began clearing the fallen tree. Officials confirmed that a significant portion of the work has already been completed, while the remaining clearance will be carried out tomorrow with support from the municipal park section.
Residents expressed concern over the presence of several such hazardous trees across densely populated areas of South Andaman. They stressed the urgent need for authorities to identify and trim or remove such trees proactively to prevent potential loss of life and property.
Locals also questioned the delay in action, stating that preventive measures are far more effective than post-incident responses and compensation. They have urged the administration to conduct a comprehensive survey of vulnerable trees in residential areas to avoid similar incidents in the future.
The residents have appreciated the efforts of the Forest Department in promptly initiating the clearance work and restoring safety in the affected area.
