Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 05: Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has urged the Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands to consider the installation of lifting (elevator)/escalator facilities at the wings of the three-storied Cellular Jail, a prominent National Memorial.
Highlighting his regular interactions with tourists during official travel, Mr. Ray stated that several visitors particularly senior citizens, elderly persons, patients, and divyangjan have expressed concerns regarding the lack of accessibility within the monument. The absence of lift or escalator facilities makes it extremely difficult for them to climb stairs and access the upper levels of the structure.
Tourists have pointed out that the upper floors offer scenic sea views and are an integral part of the visitor experience. However, due to mobility constraints, many are unable to fully explore and appreciate this historic site.
Taking note of these concerns, Mr. Ray has requested the Administration to consider the installation of lift/escalator facilities at two suitable locations within the wings of the Cellular Jail at the earliest. He emphasized that such a step would significantly improve accessibility and enhance the overall experience for all visitors, especially senior citizens and divyangjan.
The proposal aims to make the iconic heritage site more inclusive and visitor-friendly, in line with the broader objective of promoting accessible tourism in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
