Sri Vijayapuram, Apr 02: A potential major accident was averted after a pickup van carrying LPG cylinders overturned following a brake failure near Shadipur junction earlier today.
According to reports, the vehicle, loaded with around 50 cylinders of 5 kg each, was en route from Brookshabad to a retail outlet for delivery at around 10:00 AM. While approaching the junction, the driver, identified as Murugesan, reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure.
In an attempt to prevent a serious mishap, the driver first collided with an electric pole to reduce speed and then steered the vehicle towards a banana tree, after which the vehicle overturned. There were five persons in the vehicle, including the driver, three labourers, and a delivery staff.
One cylinder was damaged in the incident, causing leakage. However, swift action was taken as the remaining 49 cylinders were safely removed and reloaded onto another vehicle. The damaged cylinder was immediately secured by submerging it in water to prevent any hazard.
The driver and one occupant sustained minor injuries and were taken for medical treatment. The other labourers reportedly jumped off the vehicle in time, avoiding serious harm.
