
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar. 5 (PIB) Reinforcing its commitment to a strong culture of workplace safety, the CSL–AN Ship Repair Unit (CANSRU), a unit of Cochin Shipyard Limited, organized an extensive Safety Day programme on March 3. The event brought together CSL staff, DSS staff, contract workers and vendors for practical training and awareness activities aimed at promoting life-saving skills and safety consciousness.
The programme commenced with an inaugural address by the Unit Head, Shri Sreekanth V, who emphasized the importance of integrating the principle of “Safety First” into every aspect of the organisation’s operations. A brief overview of the Safety Day programme was presented by Shri Kapilan Perumal, Deputy Manager and Safety In-Charge at CANSRU.
One of the highlights of the event was a live firefighting demonstration conducted by the Andaman and Nicobar Fire Service. Sub-Inspector Shri Sanil, Station House Officer (Marine Fire), along with his team, demonstrated the proper use of different types of fire extinguishers and showed participants how to effectively respond to fire emergencies. The session also included practical training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), equipping participants with the skills required to respond quickly during cardiac emergencies.
The programme also featured a two-day Tobacco Awareness campaign that began on March 2. Experts from GB Pant Hospital, including doctors and psychiatrists, explained the harmful effects of tobacco consumption, highlighting its impact on lung health and mental well-being. Participants were also provided guidance on quitting tobacco and offered free counselling.
To make the programme engaging, several interactive activities were organised, including street plays depicting workplace hazards, spot quizzes on safety awareness, and week-long competitions focused on safety practices.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from workers, vendors and officials, reinforcing the message that workplace safety is a shared responsibility. Through such initiatives, CANSRU continues to strengthen safety standards and promote the well-being of its workforce in the ship repair sector.
