Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 26: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata has issued a weather advisory for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, warning of thunderstorms, strong winds and adverse sea conditions over the next few days.
According to the forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 30–40 kmph and lightning are likely to occur at one or two places over the Nicobar Islands on Sunday, 28 December. Similar weather conditions are also expected over the Nicobar Islands on Saturday, 27 December. The weather is likely to remain generally calm with no significant warnings on Wednesday, 31 December and Thursday, 1 January.
In addition, IMD has issued a swell surge alert for fishermen and sea-goers. The alert states that swell waves in the range of 1.6 to 2.0 metres in height are expected to affect the Andaman and Nicobar coastal waters, with wave periods of 16 to 20 seconds. These conditions may prevail from the afternoon of 26 December until the night of 30 December. There is also a possibility of surging of waves, especially during high tides, and people living in low-lying coastal areas have been advised to exercise utmost vigilance.
The fishermen warning indicates that thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph is likely over the Nicobar Islands during the period from 26 to 30 December. Fishermen and coastal communities are advised to remain alert and follow advisories issued by the authorities.
No port warning has been issued as of now.
The State Control Room, Directorate of Disaster Management, has advised all concerned departments, fishermen and the general public to stay informed through official updates and take necessary precautions in view of the prevailing weather conditions.
