Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 19: Mr. R Alager Swamy, Member, Zilla Parishad, Baratang and Member of the District Planning Committee, has urged the Deputy Commissioner, North and Middle Andaman, to take immediate administrative intervention for the finalisation and construction of the long-pending road stretch from Baratang Jetty to GSSS Oralkatcha.
In a formal representation, he highlighted that the approximately 200-metre road segment has remained unattended due to the non-finalisation of the executing agency. Despite repeated follow-ups, APWD has stated that the road does not fall under its jurisdiction, while NHIDCL has indicated that the stretch is not part of its sanctioned works, resulting in severe deterioration of the road condition.
The road serves as a primary access route for tourists, local residents, and students and staff of GSSS Oralkatcha. During the monsoon, the stretch becomes unsafe due to potholes and waterlogging, while excessive dust during summer poses serious public health concerns, particularly for school children.
The Zilla Parishad Member noted growing public resentment over prolonged inaction and warned that residents may resort to agitation, including a proposed Chakka Jam on January 10, 2026, if a permanent solution is not finalised before that date.
He has requested the administration to urgently finalise the jurisdiction and executing authority and to direct a joint inspection with a time-bound action plan in the larger public interest.
