Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 4:While protests intensify across South, North, and Middle Andaman over the deplorable condition of NH-4 from Baratang to Diglipur, the only stretch once hailed as “well-constructed” — between Chidiyatapu and Ferrargunj — is now crumbling at an alarming rate.
Between Garacharma and Dhanikhari, nearly four dozen major potholes have appeared, some large enough to cause a fatal accident or seriously damage any vehicle unfortunate enough to hit them. Shockingly, despite months of deterioration, NHIDCL has taken no visible action — not even temporary filling or patch repairs — leaving daily commuters to risk their lives on what should have been the safest section of NH-4.
Residents have expressed outrage, accusing the authorities of complete indifference. “It seems the administration has no control over NHIDCL,” remarked one local commuter, “and the public is paying the price with their safety.”
Citizens are now urging the Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman) to personally inspect the stretch and witness the dangerous condition of the so-called “excellent” highway.
The worsening state of the Garacharma –Ferrargunj section has become symbolic of the broader failure in highway maintenance across the islands — a situation where public patience is fast running out, and tragedy seems only a matter of time unless urgent repairs are undertaken.
