Sri Vijaya Puram, Sep 11: Hindu Rashtra Shakti (HRS), A&N Islands, has welcomed the approval of the much-needed Critical Care Unit (CCU) for the islands but has raised serious concerns over its proposed location at Haddo.
In a representation addressed to the Ministry of Health, Government of India, the Lieutenant Governor of A&N Islands, and the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Angshuman Roy, State Youth President of HRS, has urged that the CCU be relocated to the GB Pant Hospital campus for effective functionality and patient safety.
Roy pointed out that GB Pant Hospital, the main referral hospital, is situated at Atlanta Point, about 4–5 km away from Haddo. He highlighted that a CCU cannot function in isolation and requires immediate access to multi-departmental specialists, surgeons, anaesthetists, and intensivists. “No patient is admitted directly into a CCU without prior evaluation and authorization from attending doctors. Transferring critically ill patients over such a distance could be life-threatening,” he said.
The HRS leader further cautioned that without proper integration with GB Pant Hospital, the proposed CCU risks becoming “an underutilized facility—a symbolic structure rather than a functional, life-saving service.” This, he said, would not only delay emergency care but also waste valuable public funds.
HRS strongly appealed to the Government of India and the A&N Administration to reconsider the plan and ensure that the CCU is constructed within the GB Pant Hospital premises. “This integration is essential to ensure seamless coordination between doctors, specialists, surgeons, and critical care staff. The true success of this project depends on its practical usability and accessibility,” Roy stressed.
Calling it a matter of respect, dignity, and justice for the islanders’ right to timely and safe healthcare, HRS expressed confidence that the authorities will intervene at the earliest to re-align the project in the interest of the people.
