
Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 25: On 24.08.2025, Police Station Baratang received reliable information regarding illegal wildlife trade at Bamboonallah (Kanchangarh) under Baratang jurisdiction. The matter was immediately conveyed to the Forest Department, and a joint raid was planned.
A team from PS Baratang comprising SI Subramani (SHO), PCs M. Ashok Kumar, Suresh Kumar, B. Chiranjee Rao, Pramod Yadav, Rajiv Ranjan Yadav, Santosh Kumar, and M. Surya, along with officials of the Forest Department, proceeded towards Kanchangarh.
During the operation, the joint team noticed a person emerging from the jungle towards the main road with a plastic gunny bag over his shoulder. Finding his movements suspicious, the raiding team immediately intercepted him. On being questioned, the suspect namely Amrith Kumar Tirkey S/o Mr. Jerom Tirkey (31 yrs) R/o Kanchangarh, Baratang admitted that he had illegally hunted a deer inside the jungle and was carrying it with the intention of selling it for monetary gain. Upon inspection of the bag, the team recovered a dead deer weighing approximately 28 kg.
The seized deer was taken into custody under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, in the presence of Forest Officials. The accused person, along with the seized articles, was handed over to the Forest Department for further necessary legal action.
This successful joint operation underscores the commitment of North & Middle Andaman District Police to work in close coordination with the Forest Department to ensure zero tolerance against poaching and protection of biodiversity in the Islands.
