Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 24: The spirit of sportsmanship and athleticism was on full display at the Netaji Sports Complex as the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, in collaboration with the Department of Education, successfully organised a cycling competition as part of the ongoing National Sports Day 2025 celebrations. The event, held today, commemorates the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
The competition saw enthusiastic participation from cyclists across the region, with races organized for both Men and Women (Open Category). The open men’s category featured a challenging 20Km race, while the open women’s category competed over a 10Km race. Both races began and ended at the back gate of the Netaji Stadium, with the organizers earning praise for the smooth and efficient management of the event. In the Men’s 20 Km Cycling event, 18 Nos. of cyclists participated while in Women’s 10 Km event, 6 Nos. of cyclists participated.
On the occasion, Mr. Vikram Singh, Director (Sports), flagged off the Women’s Open event and Lt. Sachin Parashar, Air Electrical Officer, INS UTKROSH flagged off the Men’s Open event and prior to the flag-off, the Director (Sports) addressed the participants, commending their talent and dedication. He encouraged them to continue their sporting journeys and announced a significant new initiative to bolster cycling in the region. The Department, he stated, will soon be launching a Centre of Excellence for cyclists through the “Khelo India” program. This new facility will be equipped with high-quality training and a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment, providing local athletes with the resources needed to develop their skills and compete at a higher level.
Officials extended their gratitude to all the cyclists, parents, and other officials whose participation contributed to the event’s success.
In Men’s Category: Mr. R. Saket secured Gold Medal, Mr. Asim Kujur secured Silver Medal and Mr. Amir secured Bronze Medal.
Similarly, in Women’s Category: Ms. Faith secured Gold Medal, Ms. Anushika Lal secured Silver Medal and Ms. Sudhiksha secured Bronze Medal.
The winners will be awarded their medals at the valedictory function scheduled for August 29, which marks the official culmination of the National Sports Day celebrations.
