Ramnagar, Aug 20: The Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Ramnagar, Mr. Mithun Das, along with PRI members and the local public, has announced a peaceful mass dharna and road blockade on 21st August 2025 from 8:00 AM onwards at Kalighat Junction. The protest is being organized against the Electricity Department over persistent and prolonged power cuts and repeated faults in the Ramnagar electricity lines, which have caused severe inconvenience to households, students, and businesses.
Ramanagar Gram Panchayat Pradhan, Mr. Mithun Das, told Andaman Sheekha that the protest is being organized as repeated complaints and discussions with the electricity officials have failed to bring any concrete solution.
He claimed that the protest has also received support from Kalighat Gram Panchayat and Nabagram Panchayat.
Earlier, a formal letter had been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, North & Middle Andaman, Mayabunder, on 12th August 2025, highlighting the public grievances. In that letter, six specific demands were raised, including the posting of regular engineering staff at Diglipur station, installation of a transformer to isolate fault-prone areas, separate JEs for Kalighat and Kishorinagar sites, shifting of power lines from forest to roadside areas, immediate field visits by technical staff, and dedicated manpower for Ramnagar to promptly address public complaints.
Despite repeated complaints and follow-ups with the administration, the villagers allege that no effective action has been taken, leading to a complete loss of public trust. As a result, it has been decided that the PRIs will not hold any closed-door discussions with the Electricity Department. Instead, any talks will only take place openly at the protest site in front of the public.
The Ramnagar Gram Panchayat has further stated that if the electricity issues are not addressed immediately, the Electricity Department might as well “start selling candle lights” in proportion to the monthly bills collected.
