submitted an urgent appeal to the Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, highlighting the dire condition of the Junglighat Shamshan Ghat (Hindu Cremation Ground).
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor, State Youth President Mr. Angshuman Roy emphasized the urgent need for renovation and sanitation at the cremation site. He expressed serious concern over the deteriorated state of the facility, which has become a cause of distress for bereaved families during the last rites.
Key issues raised include:
• Dilapidated cremation platforms and damaged boundary walls, posing safety risks.
• Frequent intrusion of stray dogs and pigs, compromising the sanctity of the cremation ground and creating serious health hazards.
• Absence of basic facilities, such as toilets, clean drinking water, shaded waiting areas, and proper lighting—particularly affecting women, children, and the elderly.
• Lack of firewood storage, poor drainage, and inadequate infrastructure to support extended rituals.
“This cremation ground serves a large segment of the Hindu community in Port Blair, and its present condition is deeply undignified,” Mr. Roy stated. “Immediate government intervention is needed to restore this sacred site and provide families the dignity and comfort they deserve while performing final rites.”
The organization has urged the administration to take prompt action by initiating renovation of the platforms and boundary walls, removing stray animals, installing toilets and water facilities, and improving infrastructure including drainage, lighting, and shaded seating.
Hindu Rashtra Shakti has appealed to the Lt. Governor to uphold the constitutional right to religious dignity and ensure that essential public infrastructure for religious purposes is maintained in a manner befitting the community’s needs.
