Port Blair, Apr 10: A 5 MWp Solar power plant has been established at the Garacharama hill near the CARI campus by the A&N Administration through the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), a Public Sector Utility of Govt. of India with the ambitious plan to achieve green power. M/s NTPC has synchronized the 5 MWp solar power plant with the electricity grid on 30.3.13 on trial run and declared it commercially operational since 31.3.13.
The 5 MWp solar power plant is estimated to generate around 7.2 million units of power annually resulting in saving of diesel of around 1950 KL per year which will help in reduction of approximately 6500 to 8400 tonnes of carbon emission to our fragile environment.
The A&N Administration has successfully added another dimension in power generation through renewable energy with the establishment of this SPV power plant and has enabled these islands in finding a place in solar map of the country.
