The World Blood Donor Day was formally inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Dr. H.M. Siddharaju, Deputy Director Family Welfare, A & N Administration. He was joined by Dr. Subrata Saha, Project Director, ANACS / Director, SBTC, and Dr. Shiv Shankar Singh, Senior Consultant (Medicine), Dr. Ritika’s Diagnostic Solution Multi-Speciality Hospital marking the beginning of the World Blood Donor Day celebrations.
On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, Dr. H.M. Siddharaju spoke passionately about the importance of voluntary blood donation. Highlighting this year’s theme, “Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives,” he reminded everyone that the need for safe blood is constant and crucial, especially during surgeries, accidents, and serious medical treatments. Dr. Siddharaju emphasized the social value of donating blood, calling it a simple yet powerful way to help others. “You don’t need to be a doctor to save a life,” he said. “By donating blood, anyone can become a lifesaver.” His message encouraged people to come forward, not just today, but regularly, to support this noble cause and bring hope to those in need.
Dr. Subrata Saha expressed heartfelt gratitude to all dignitaries and voluntary blood donors for their invaluable support to this noble cause. Speaking at the special event, Dr. Saha emphasized the vital importance of regular blood donation and shared the historical background of this global observance. He explained that World Blood Donor Day was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2004 to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products, while also honoring voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving contributions.
He noted that June 14 was chosen to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who discovered the ABO blood group system—an achievement that revolutionized transfusion medicine. Dr. Saha also called for greater participation in blood donation drives, especially among students, to help prevent shortages in the islands and to build a strong culture of voluntary blood donation.
Dr. Shiv Shankar Singh extended his heartfelt thanks to the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) for accepting their request to host the World Blood Donor Day event at Dr. Ritika’s Diagnostic Solution Multi-Speciality Hospital. He shared that it was a matter of great pride and honour for the hospital to be part of such a meaningful occasion. Dr. Singh also expressed sincere appreciation to all the voluntary donors who came forward to donate blood. Highlighting the health benefits of regular blood donation, he mentioned that donating blood every three months not only helps save lives but also supports the donor’s own health. “Each donation includes a health check-up through blood tests, and studies have shown that regular donors may have a lower risk of heart attacks,” he added.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Senthil Nathan, VBD Incharge. He expressed his gratitude to all the dignitaries for their presence and support, and extended special thanks to Dr. Ritika’s Diagnostic Solution Multi-Speciality Hospital for hosting the event. He also acknowledged Doordarshan for providing video coverage and helping amplify the message of voluntary blood donation to a wider audience.
