
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 10: The Composite Regional Centre (CRC), Andaman & Nicobar Islands, in association with the Rotary Club, Sri Vijaya Puram, and Mahaveer Seva Sadan, begins a 05-days Free Prosthetic & Orthotic Camp at the CRC premises in Brookshabad, from 10th April to 14th April 2025.
As part of its ongoing mission to empower persons with disabilities, the CRC, A&N Islands, is under the administrative control of the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) an institution established under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and with an unwavering support from the A & N Administration continues to provide holistic services including rehabilitation, counseling, therapeutic interventions, skill development, and assistive device support. The Centre also conducts various training programs, awareness campaigns, and capacity-building initiatives for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers.
The camp began with the gracious presence of Smti. Sumitha Mol.S, Director, CRC, A & N Islands, Smti. Raj Mahajan, Founding Member, Mahaveer Seva Sadan, Shri Sagar Khurrana, President, Rotary Club; Shri Dhinakaran Guruswamy, Secretary, Rotary Club; and Shri Diwakar, Member, Rotary Club and with other members of the Rotary Club made it ensure the camp’s success. This included thorough publicity of the event to reach beneficiaries in the most remote areas, mobilizing participants, offering shelter and transportation services, and, most importantly, hosting a press conference to raise awareness of this noble cause.
The five-day camp is a significant step in fulfilling CRC’s vision of inclusivity and mobility for all. A team of expert technicians from Kolkata has arrived to render their professional services during the camp, ensuring high-quality care and personalized fitting of artificial limbs and calipers. The team led by Shri Gautam Roy, Chief Prosthetic & Orthotic (P & O), Mahaveer Seva Sadan, Kolkata with his team of skillful hands and compassionate service provided the professional help to around 50 beneficiaries from various walks of life from A & N Islands received services like upper limb like arms and hands, lower limbs like legs, feet or toes, ankle and foot (used for foot drop, cerebral palsy, stroke etc.), Knee-ankle foot used for polio, muscular dystrophy etc. The services are conveniently provided at the doorstep of our islands. Interestingly, the process begins with assessing the required limbs, followed by taking measurements, and then preparing them through casting. The prostheses will be delivered during the valedictory function on 14th April 2025.
This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for beneficiaries by enhancing their independence and mobility, reaffirming the commitment of all associate organizations to social service and community welfare of these Islands.
